Mediation and Moderation: Modern Methods and Approaches
Five-day Course • June 17 - 21, 2013• Lawrence, Kansas
Presented by the Quantitative Training Program of Psychology and the Center for Research Methods and Data Analysis at the University of Kansas.
Institute Overview
Classic and contemporary approaches to estimating moderation and mediation effects; topics include path analysis, indirect and direct effects, testing intervening variable effects, probing and plotting interactions, and combining moderation and mediation.
Objectives
This five-day course is focused on the application of principles of linear modeling, primarily using OLS regression, to exploring questions about mediated (i.e., indirect) and moderated (i.e., interaction) effects. We will spend roughly one third to one half of the course talking about partitioning effects into direct and indirect components and how to quantify and test hypotheses about indirect effects, and roughly one-third to one half talking about estimating, testing, probing, and visualizing interactions in linear models. Toward the end, we will integrate moderation and mediation by discussing how to conceptualize and test for conditional indirect effects (“moderated mediation”) and whether moderated effects are mediated (mediated moderation). Computer applications will focus on SPSS and SAS and various tools we have invented to facilitate the analysis, but we will discuss the use of other software at various points when appropriate.
Audience
This course will be helpful for researchers in any field—including psychology, sociology, education, business, human development, political science, public health, communication—and others who want to learn how to apply the latest methods in moderation and mediation analysis using readily-available programs such as SPSS and SAS. Participants should have a good working knowledge of the principles and practice of multiple regression and elementary statistical inference. No knowledge of matrix algebra is required or assumed.
Instructors
Paul Jose, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. Paul received his PhD in Developmental Psychology from Yale University in 1980 and does research on social development of adolescents and families. His recently published book entitled Doing statistical mediation and moderation (by Guilford Press) just came out in April of this year.
Alex Schoemann, PhD, is a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Research Methods and Data Analysis at the University of Kansas. Alex received his PhD from the University of Kansas in 2011 in Social and Quantitative Psychology. His research focuses on latent interactions and Monte Carlo simulations using SEM.
Software and Computer Support
Participants are expected to bring their own laptops (Mac or Windows) with a recent version of SPSS Statistics (no older than version 19) or SAS (at least version 9.2) installed. SAS users should have the PROC IML package installed as well. A 14 day trial version of SPSS is available from www.spss.com. SPSS users should ensure their installed copy is patched to its most latest release. It is expected that participants will come to the class with good familiarity with the basics of ordinary least squares regression (although an overview of OLS will be the first topic of the course), as well as the use of SPSS or SAS, including some working experience with writing in syntax. Some exposure to advanced methods will be provided using Mplus, though access to a copy of Mplus is not required for this course. Participants are encouraged to bring their own data to apply their learning between daily meetings.
